Abhay Charan De, better known by his religious name A.C. Bhaktivedānta Svāmī Prabhupāda or Śrīla Prabhupāda (Calcutta, September 1, 1896 – Vṛndāvana, November 14, 1977), was an Indian Viṣṇuite missionary and writer.
He was a spiritual master (ācārya) in the disciplic chain (guruparamparā), founded by the 16th century Bengali mystic Caitanya (Viṣṇuismo gauḍīya).
Founder of ISKCON (formally “International Association for Krishna Consciousness”, better known as the “Hare Krishna movement”), a religious association that aims to spread Gauḍīya Viṣṇuism in the West, Prabhupada is also the author of numerous writings, translations and commentaries on the literature of the Vedas, the Upaniṣads, the Bhagavadgītā, the Bhāgavata Purāṇa and the Caitanya-caritāmṛta.
